LIFE COACH OVERVIEW

Life Coaches are sort of like a combination between a mentor, therapist, and baseball coach (but for life instead of baseball).

The main difference between a therapist and a life coach is that a therapist is focused on helping you manage present emotions by understanding your past and a life coach is focused on understanding your present to create the future you desire.

There are many times in life where the path can seem confusing, decision-making is hard and we can feel a little lost. On the path of self-discovery (which we are all on, no matter what our age, profession, or goals!) it can sometimes be really hard to figure out how to get from point A to point B. Think of a life coach as a trained mentor who can help you identify obstacles, personal strengths, weaknesses, or just to help you get yourself back on track.

Whether the issues at hand are personal or professional, a coach can help you re-center and create a plan of action for success!

WHAT SCIENCE IS SAYING

Coaches help you focus on your inner wisdom and guiding light

Life Coaches can help clients transition through professional change, loss or grief, relationship decisions, recuperating mentally from illness, communication difficulties, a lack of clear priorities or inspiration, or overall feelings of being “stuck” in life.

According to the Journal BMC Health Research, “There is no precise definition of coaching, but it has been described as a method to ‘unlocking a person’s potential to maximize their own performance’, to encourage patients to acknowledge their creativity and to find their own unique solutions by focusing on the present and being goal-oriented. There are several aspects common to nearly all forms of coaching such as the core assumption that people have an innate capacity to grow and develop, as well as a focus on constructing solutions and goal attainment processes rather than just analyzing the problems.” In a controlled study conducted by BMC regarding the use of a life coach with people recovering from illness it was discovered that patients who participated in a coaching program were more likely to  “a) adopt a new view of themselves and their illness, b) try out new methods, and c) work systematically with their goals.”

A great coach will understand that addressing clinical mental health issues alongside working with a coach is sometimes necessary. It is possible (and even recommended!) to work with both a holistic therapist and a holistic life coach at the same time.
