LACTATION CONSULTANT OVERVIEW

Mothers, we’ve got you covered!

On the WellSet platform, we list trusted Birth Educators, Doulas, Midwives, and Lactation Consultants. For expecting mothers, couples, and those planning for conception, Birth Practitioners are an invaluable resource to provide guidance and knowledge during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum transitions. So, if you are looking to find a doula, you’ve come to the right place! So what does a Doula, Birth Educator or Lactation consultant actually do?

A large role of the Birth Educator is to provide direct support to expecting mothers as they transition through pregnancy into parenthood. This includes helping mothers feel independent, educated, and empowered while making important decisions surrounding their birth experience. They can provide in-person counseling from the first trimester into the delivery room and beyond, helping mothers feel grounded through the entirety of their pregnancy.

Midwives and Doulas assist with easing the birthing experience and also act as a liaison between the family and hospital or birthing center. Midwives help deliver babies in hospitals and at home, making them a great choice if you are unsure of your birth location. They work holistically with new parents before and after the birth and can assist with a range of topics from nutrition and birth techniques, to lactation and weening.

After the birth of a child, more specialized practitioners such as Lactation Consultants can help a mother and baby acclimate to their new lives together.

WHAT SCIENCE IS SAYING

Better birth, breastfeeding, and communication outcomes

The International Childbirth Education Association states that Childbirth Educators can positively impact birth outcomes and parent satisfaction and endorses the concept of a health care circle, with the family in the center and a team of holistic providers around them.

“Benefits of prenatal education classes have included increased confidence for labor and birth among women who attended prenatal classes, higher likelihood of breastfeeding, improved communication between childbearing women and their maternity care providers, decreased need for analgesic medication in labor, and increased satisfaction with birth” (Chalmers & Kingston, 2009Enkin et al., 2000) via the NCBI.

Birth Educators create specific curriculum for families that can include spousal communication, breastfeeding practices, birthing techniques, pregnancy nutrition, lactation assistance. Some practitioners work as a team with other birth practitioners such as Doulas, Midwives and Lactation Consultants.  Use WellSet to find a doula or birth educator in your area!
