MEDITATION COACHING OVERVIEW

Meditation is not just for monks. Its medical and mental health benefits are science-backed and proven.

If you aren’t already a person who meditates, you may think meditation is about sitting cross-legged and making a “b” and “d” shape with your fingers and thumbs while saying “OMMM”. Well, it might be that to some people (we don’t judge) but really it’s a scientific method of calming your mind and body that can be done by anyone, anywhere that can have enormous health benefits ranging from a reduction of anxiety and depression to reducing inflammation and increasing self-esteem and memory.

Mindfulness and meditation are sometimes used synonymously and “meditation” itself can look differently to different practitioners. Some coaches teach quiet mind-clearing meditations, some guide students through immersive visualizations. Other teachers combine breathwork and yoga with meditation. Still, others guide their students to write or walk mindfully.

Find a style that works for you by working with a meditation coach. If you can carve out a small mindfulness moment in each day, your health and happiness will thank you!

WHAT SCIENCE IS SAYING

17.3 million adults in the United States had at least one major depressive episode last year.

We have a mental health crisis in this country. Nearly 14% of adolescents struggle with depression yearly and 1 in 5 Americans has a depressive episode in their lifetime. Studies show that meditation and mindfulness can reduce stress, anxiety, the effects of depression and can have long term mental health benefits.

Studies show that meditation can also help with a host of conditions beyond just anxiety and depression including inflammation, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), fibromyalgia, psoriasis and post-traumatic stress disorder.

WellSet: How can meditation help heal the mind and body?

HAMELIN: Meditation cuts straight to the root of suffering, and therefore all dis-ease in the mind and the body. When beginning a meditation practice, the first thing commonly realized is the voice inside one’s head that is non-stop talking. It is a common misperception that meditating requires quieting the inscent chatter of this voice. When in actuality, the purpose of meditation is to observe it. In regular practice, we learn to strengthen the witness that sits behind the voice and simply watches.

To strengthen our ability to be the witness, rather than to identify with the inscent, chaotic, and reactionary voice, we learn how to concentrate on something in the here and now — like the breath. Through meditation practice, we build our capacity for sustained attention, with 10-second increments of sustained breath-focus being huge progress. As we stand in the witness, we notice the immense spaciousness that has been there all along. This spaciousness becomes the vehicle to immense transformation in every area of our lives.

WellSet: What do you love most about being a Meditation Coach/Guide?

BOUHOUCH: Meditation to me is more than just letting go of stress, it’s a way to rewire our nervous system to be more calm and centered so that we can take a step back and make decisions from an intuitive space instead of always reacting out of habit. Meditation is a beautiful tool for connecting back to the intuitive guidance that is within all of us, most of us have just disconnected from our bodies and our intuition in today’s busy world where we’re expected to move at such a fast pace.

Sitting in stillness with your breath is a returning back to yourself – it creates space to listen to the whispers and nudges that come from within. It allows us to create consciously, and to pave a path of your own having the trust in your own vision.

I love being able to witness the personal transformation that occurs when I work with women who are feeling overwhelmed, stuck, and exhausted, and they are able to transform their relationship with themselves and their situation through our work together.
